Stephen Hankens
May 22, 1945 - July 27, 2010
Steve Hankens, age 65, of Cherokee, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 27th, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center, among family and friends.

Born in 1945, to Don and Ivagene Hankens, Steve was a lifelong resident of Cherokee, leaving briefly only to attend college and law school at Drake University, in Des Moines, as well as to serve in the United States Army. While stationed at Fort Ord in California, Steve served as a medic, helping soldiers returning from Vietnam recover from their injuries. It was there he realized how much he enjoyed caring for people. Following his discharge, he completed his undergraduate education and went on to receive his law degree. After graduation, Steve returned to Cherokee to work alongside his father, Don, and brother, Dan, where he continued to practice for the next 38 years.

In recent years, Steve was known for his regular visits to the hospital and local nursing homes. Wherever he went, he always greeted people with a smile and a joke, and those who knew him will attest to his warm heart and generosity. Steve is survived by his sister, Ann; brother, Dan; sons, Jeff and Kevin, and their wives, Sarah and Melissa, respectively; their mother, Deb; two grandchildren; and many good friends.

I was a friend of Steve in the Army at Fort Sam, Texas, Letterman, and Fort Ord. Just doing a google search when thinking as a veteran. Shocking result. I knew him as a supper person and really did want to make contact again. Guess this is the best I can do.

I just today learned of the death, and share my condolences. As a then 15-year-old, I was not aware or mature enough to know WHICH Hankens saved my life, or to send a thank-you note, but in 1967 our boat exploded and my friend, in a panic, nearly drowned me. Two men in the Cherokee Hankens boat pulled us out of the water. Greg Koenig, the friend, and I will be forever grateful.

I want to extend my sympathy to Steve's family. He and his dad were our family lawyers for eons. Steve helped me get through the death of my father, Melvin Johnson, not only professionally but also personally by his caring and humor... I used to tell people that MY LAWYER lived in Iowa even though I live in Missouri... I'll miss him...

Deb -- I was very sorry to hear of Steve's death. I knew Steve, of course, since we were very young boys. Our first project together, now nearly 60 years ago, was to build as a class project a scaled down model of the interior of a volcano -- a project that required us to pour copious amounts of flower and water into a prefabricated box. Throughout my school years in Cherokee, Steve was an invariable member of our little group of guys who hung out together whenever we could. I don't remember in all of that time Steve ever having said anything negative about anyone else or raising his voice in anger. He was a wonderful friend throughout our growing up years. Although I did not see Steve as often as I would have liked when we became adults, I always enjoyed the time that I was able to spend with him. Steve's passing is a very great loss. Just knowing he was there was a source of comfort and happiness for me. My condolences to you, Deb, and to the rest of the family.

Dear Tim, Dan and the entire Hankens Family: I wanted to let you know that I had the great privilege of meeting and getting to know Steve over the last two years and I was fortunate to be able to say that he will always be in my thoughts because of the man that he was and how he cared about people. Steve was the first person that I met when I moved to Cherokee and I will always remember him as a warm and enduring person. I am greatly sorry for your loss.

My deepest sympathies to Steve's family upon his death. If it was not for a conflict you can be assured that after 50+ years of friendship I would be there to personally extend my condolences. For luck I was able to spend some time with Steve last Fall when he assisted me with my mother's estate. He was a wonderful friend and I will miss him greatly, but like you I still have my memories. God bless.
