Mabel A. Heick
December 22, 1920 - December 18, 2010
Mabel Anna Neisses was born December 22, 1920 to Charles and Anna Neisses in Murdo, SD. She married Ralph Tolzin April 29, 1939 and they farmed south of Aurelia until 1954. They had four children.

In 1955, Mabel began working as a nurse’s aide at Sioux Valley Hospital and cleaned homes as well to support her family. She met and married Arthur John Heick on August 12, 1959.

In 1962, she started a new house keeping unit at the hospital, during which time she also went on ambulance calls with Art. In 1967, Mabel began caring for patients with special needs. In 1972, she retired and spent most of the summers with Art and other family members at “The Cabin” on Dead Lake in Minnesota. Here, she served meals of fish for family and friends. Her door was always open to everyone.

Survivors include one daughter, Marla (Bill) Avery of Camarilo, CA, three sons, Curtis (Joyce) Tolzin of Cleveland, MN, Keith (Jan) Tolzin of Ellensburg, WA, Kermit (Sandy) Tolzin of Clarinda, IA, and one step-daughter, Lonna (Robert) McEwen of Savannah, GA; eight grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Fern Benner of Hemet, CA (now Clarinda, IA), and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Art Heick, four sisters, six brothers, and one great-grandchild.
