Thomas L. Heidenreich
April 1, 1954 - August 16, 2011
Tom was born April 1, 1954, in Stockton, California, to Maxine (Nomsen) and Donald Heidenreich. He was raised in Wall Lake, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1972. In 1976 he obtained a degree in social work from Morningside College. Tom was employed by the State of Iowa Department of Human Services from 1976 until his retirement in 2009, having spent 33 years working at Cherokee Mental Health Institute. During that time he touched the lives of many people - patients and families, staff and coworkers, and more than seventy-five doctors and resident psychiatrists.

Tom was an athlete and an avid sports enthusiast who enjoyed bicycling and playing tennis, racquetball, and golf as well as hunting and fishing. When his children were young, he coached youth soccer and Little League baseball, and he was a Little League umpire and a member of Little League board. Having volunteered at WHS track meets for many years, Tom was named the Honorary Referee for the 2011 Tomahawk Relays. Tom also served on the board of the North Star Community Credit Union for 9 years. The family spent many summers camping in the Black Hills, and prior to his illness, he and Minda worked two summers in Custer State Park where Tom was known as Yard Man at the State Game Lodge.

Tom is survived by his wife of 35 years, Minda; two daughters, Rachel (Ryan) Woratschka of Cadott, Wisconsin, and Molly (Josh) Gingery of Cherokee; a son, Steve (Stacey) Heidenreich of Stillwater, Minnesota; a grandson, Tyler Woratschka; a brother, Jim (Connie) Heidenreich of Kansas City, Missouri; his parents-in-law, Robert and Doris Battern, of Columbia, Missouri; brother-in-law John (Julie) Battern of Le Mars, Iowa, sisters-in-law, Kari (Robert) Lucke of Columbia, Missouri, and Alisa (Duane) Larson of Eureka, Missouri, as well as nieces, nephews, and many longtime friends.

Preceding Tom in death were his grandfather, Louis Nomsen, his grandmother, Edna (Carroll) Nomsen, his parents, and his faithful hunting dog Max.

I was so sorry to learn of Tom's passing. Before moving to Washington I worked at the Mental Health for 21 years, much (or all)of the time while Tom was working there. He was always so friendly, helpful, and considerate of others. My you find comfort in knowing he is at peace, and that you will see him again. Hold all of the wonderful memories of times you had together close, and he will never be far away. God's blessings to your family.

Minda and family you have our deepest sympathy. What a huge loss for not only your family, but also all of us who had the honor of having Tom as a friend. He was a fantastic asset to the community and a great role model for all of us. We certainly would have been to the services if we had been in Cherokee. We will continue to pray for your family as you mourn this loss. Take some comfort in remembering all of those wonderful memories you have with Tom that will be with you forever.

It was with great sadness that I read about Tom in the paper today. Tom was my roommate at Morningside for a year. I have only seen him a few times since we parted ways years ago but we always joked about both of us having gray hair at an early age (people said there must have been something in the water at Morningside). Tom was great guy and as I read about the events of his life I could see he remained a great guy throughout his life. He was one of those people who was just fun to be around. I am so very sorry for your loss and my prayers are with you.

Our family will never forget the first time we met the Heidenreich family in the wonderful Black Hills just over 15 years ago. They were instant friends. That doesn't happen very often in ones life. Our paths didn't cross very often, but when they did Tom was the first to come over with a bear hug and a hand shake. It was if we had just seen one another - he was always a friend and always will be. Tom is now cancer-free and his chains are gone. Blessings to each of the family, we love you all so very much and have been thinking of you every day.
