Cecil K. Akin, the son of Jess and Mary (Sargent) Akin was born December 10, 1921, in Cherokee, IA. His childhood years were spent in Cherokee. At age 5, his family moved to Ida Grove, IA where he received his education.

Following school, Cecil enlisted in the United States Marines. He served in Iwo Jima and Guadal Canal where he earned three purple hearts and a bronze star. Following his honorable discharge from the military, Cecil worked as a train conductor for the Illinois Central Railroad for 20 years. At the time of his hiring, he was the youngest train conductor ever to work for railroad.

Cecil enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing, boxing, gardening, and cooking. Most of all Cecil enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

On November 5, 2011, Cecil passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jess and Mary Akin; three brothers, Jess, Donald, and Bobby Akin; and two sisters, Helen Hansen and Letha Akin.

Cecil was a nice man I had the pleasure of seeing on occasion to help with his hearing aids. He seemed like a kind gentle soul.
My sympathies.

I am an aid from careage home care that helped Cecil in his last months. I learned very many interesting things about him and thought his stories about being over seas were very interesting. We will miss him and will be greatly remembered.
