William M. Sauer, son of Milo and Mae (Caley) Sauer, was born on June 19, 1931 in Cherokee, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Immaculate Conception School in Cherokee, Iowa. John furthered his education by attending St. Thomas College in St. Paul, MN and University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was involved in the Korean War from 1952 – 1954.

A favorite family memory is the weekend of May 1987 when John and Mary Ann, both scored Holes-in-one on consecutive days at the Cherokee Country Club. Mary scored hers on Hole #4 during their Friday evening couple’s league and John scored his on Hole #8 the next day during his usual Saturday afternoon round of golf.

On December 25, 2011, John passed away peacefully, with his family at his side, at Parkland Hospital in Omaha, NE at the age of 80, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. John was preceded in death by his parents, Milo and Mae Sauer and his beloved wife, Mary Ann Sauer.

To Nancy, Joan, Tom and Bill: I was so sorry to hear about John. He was such a nice man and upstanding member of the Cherokee Community. Our prayers are with you especially at this holiday time. Thinking about John sure brought up a lot of memories of hanging around the Sauer home. He seemed to always pop his head in and say something funny! My name is Joyce Brooker Chesney, my parents Wayne and Helen Brooker always thought so highly of both John and Milo. That was always where dad wanted to shop. I remember going to the country club and seeing John and he always remembered who I was. God Bless and know he made a great impact of the hometown people.
