Phoebe (McTasney) (Lee) Mummert was born April 21, 1910 in Cherokee, IA. Her childhood years were spent in Cherokee, where she attended the Immaculate Conception School.

On May 19, 1927, she was united in marriage to William Lee. They lived in Odebolt and Ida Grove, IA, before settling in Cherokee. They were blessed with two sons, Ken and Bill .

During her working years, Phoebe was employed at Coon’s Jewelry in Cherokee, as well as Ellerbroek's Clothing—a business she eventually owned and operated. She also worked at Lee's Hardware.

Phoebe’s husband William died in 1967. Three years later, she married Karl Mummert, and moved to Aurelia. Following Karl's death , she returned to Cherokee where she lived until her own death on February 8, 2012-just shy of her 102nd birthday.

Phoebe was a member of the Catholic Daughters, the Cherokee Villa Auxiliary, Pilot Pals, Happy Hookers, and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, playing cards, fishing, and eating out with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Lee and Karl Mummert; her son Kenneth; grandson, Patrick Lee; two brothers, Merle and Chet McTasney; and sister, Katherine Nordquist.

She is survived by her son Bill and his wife, Linda Lee, and daughter-in-law, Molly Lee, all of Cherokee; her grandchildren: Nancy (Lee) and Brent Hofer, Tom and Maureen Lee, Wendy (Lee) and Ken Nelson, Shawn Lee, Bob and Donna Lee, Matt Lee, David and Bethany Lee; 12 great-grandchildren; her step-children, Roger and Barb Mummert, Tom and Karla McCleery, and Arlo and Marlys Riessen; other relatives and friends.

Phoebe had such a way of making people smile and feel good. She always had a story to tell and when she joined the Northside Birthday Club to which I belonged, she was such a joy and a great cook also. She could joke, laugh, was always busy doing something somewhere. She was amazing that she was able to stay in her home as long as she did and still go out and about town. I am sorry to hear of her passing but Heaven just received a great lady. Thank you Phoebe for being my friend and my sympathies to all her family who will miss her so much.

We are so sorry to hear about Phoebe. We always enjoy visiting with her. She has such a sense of humor. One of our favorite memories was her telling us that she had to go to the nursing home to read to the old people. We don't think she even thought about the fact that she was probably older than them. It didn't really matter, because in her eyes, she was younger. How amazing that she continued to do those things and to be so active. ..maybe even too active at times....but she did it her way. When we shoveled her snow, she usually was in the window smiling & waving at us. Truly a remarkable woman. We feel blessed to count her as a friend.May your memories help comfort you at this time.
