Donald J. Murphy
March 9, 1932 - March 5, 2012
Donald J. Murphy, the son of Maurice and Mary (Smith) Murphy was born March 9, 1932 in Emmetsburg, IA. His childhood years were spent on a farm near Emmetsburg before moving to town with his family. It was there that he attended school and graduated from Emmetsburg High School.

On May 25, 1953, Donald was united in marriage to Alice Conway, his high school sweetheart, who ironically grew up in the house next door to him in Emmetsburg. Don served with the Army from 1953-1955 during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge, Don worked at Ted’s Super Value Store for a couple years before he went to work for Swanson’s Grocery Stores. His family resided in Le Mars, IA for a short time and then moved to Cherokee, IA in 1964. Don continued to work for Swanson’s and eventually Hy-Vee for many years. After retiring from Hy-Vee, he continued his grocery career at SuperValu Inc.

Don was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee and the Knights of Columbus where he was a Fourth Degree Knight. He served on the Cherokee Country Club Board of Directors and the President of the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, hunting, and playing euchre with his family. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

On Monday, March 5, 2012, Donald passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center at the age of 79. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Mary Murphy; and three brothers: Dan, Bill, and Dick Murphy.

He is survived by his loving wife, Alice Murphy of Cherokee, IA; five children: Daniel (Karen) Murphy of Alexandria, MN, Kathryn (Leo) Novosel of Oak Lawn, IL, Michael (Dawn) Murphy of Alexandria, MN, Mark (Linda) Murphy of Cherokee, IA, and Patrick (Shondra) of Urbandale, IA; 23 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters: Mary Ellen Shimon of Cedar Rapids, IA and Eve Bennett of Cedar Rapids, IA; one brother, Jerry (Lois) Murphy of Cold Springs, MN; as well as other relatives and many friends.

Just received the news today.. I will miss Don a lot... great guy that was always interested in what you were doing... It seems the people that surrounded me in my youth are all leaving one by one... and I will miss them. I always looked forward to making the Spring Lake Holiday Breakfasts and one of the reasons was to talk to Don. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dear Alice & Family,
So sorry to hear that Don passed away. So many memories and good times that we had the opportunity to share with you and Don. What I remember the best was what a great dancer Don was and how I loved dancing with him at our Christmas parties or any other gathering for Hy-Vee we got to attend together. Now, Tom & he can go fishing together like they use to so many years ago. My condolences to you, Alice and your children. He was a fun loving, humorous, caring and loving man and will be missed greatly by anyone who knew him.

We are sorry to hear that Don has passed on. I was fortunate to get to know Don during a few of the annual Murphy fishing trips to Minnesota. Don held down the camp working as our manager and chief of fishing operations. I am eternally grateful to Don for his patience and kindness providing hands-on training for my son John and me as he taught us to play Euchre and clean Walleye. He will always be remembered for his open and friendly nature and surely missed.

May this Irish prayer give you some solace in your time of need.
God looked around His garden and found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb, so He closed your weary eyelids and whispered "Peace be thine". It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you the day God called you home.
My heart goes out to my extended family, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Pat & family,
I am very saddened to learn that Mr. Murphy passed away. I have known the Murphy family since I was just a kid, and have have lots of memories growing up not too far from that 'Pink House' on Bluff Street. Pat, I am sure your Dad grew very tired of all the TP in the trees, plastic forks in planted in the yard, us girls ringing the doorbell leaving May baskets, and getting hit up to buy Girl Scout cookies every year. But your Dad was such a kind and loving father it always meant a smile, a wave or cheer from him at any sporting event. A big 'hey there!' when I would see him at the Sioux Valley tournament every year. Your Dad was one of a kind. Who else would have a kid who wore a Leprechaun suit to school on St. Patrick's day until you eventually grew out of it.. (5th grade?)
I remember one time in elementary school when we were playing and I decided it would be great idea to put your football in the mailbox on the corner. The lid shut and I instantly knew that had been a bad idea. My Mom decided that my punishment would be to sit by the mailbox all the next day. I had to wait for the mailman to unlock the mailbox, apologize to the mailman, take the ball to your house, give it back, and apologize. After a long day of waiting, I eventually got the ball back and walked slowly to your house. I rang the bell, and when your Dad opened the door I was a little afraid. 'Can you please give this to Pat?' I said and he just smiled and said 'I sure will, Kristin'. I heard him chuckle when he closed the door.
I am so sorry for your loss. I am so sorry for Cherokee's loss. Don Murphy was top notch.
All the best
Kristin (Hauswald) Constantineau - yellow house, Willow street.
