Mattie 'Doris' Heistand
May 23, 1935 - September 2, 2013
Mattie 'Doris' (Dean) Heistand, the daughter of Robert and Bertha (Dingler) Dean, was born in Hogansville, GA on May 23, 1935. Her childhood years were spent in Georgia, where she attended the local schools and worked in the cotton mill.

While working for her sister and brother-in-law in their Bar & Grill, Doris met her future husband, Robert Heistand. The two were married on December 1, 1955, at LaGrange, GA. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Missouri Valley, IA, and then spent nearly 20 years in the Omaha, NE and Council Bluffs, IA area. They were blessed with six children: Julie, Vivian, Linda, Tim, Christine and Robert. Doris worked as a nurse's aide in a nursing home for 15 years while living in Omaha-Council Bluffs. In 1976 they moved to Cherokee, IA, where Bob worked at Wilson Foods, and Doris took care of their home, babysat for numerous families, and volunteered her time at a nursing home.

She enjoyed bowling, working in the yard, playing cards with family, putting puzzles together, doing crosswords and cross-stitch. She especially loved her cats. She passed away at St. Luke's Hospital in Sioux City, IA, on Monday, September 2, 2013, at age 78. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob on June 24, 2008; an infant son, Robert Eugene Heistand; grandson Donny Wood; 2 sisters, Nellie Brown and Dovie Lou Shelly; and 4 brothers, Jim, Dan, BuFord and Bruce Dean.

Survivors include her children and their families: Julie (Trapper) Rudisill of Cherokee, Vivian (David) Gerber of Stoughton, WI, Linda (John) Waugh of Council Bluffs, IA, Tim Heistand (Brad Butterworth) of Phoenix, AZ, and Christine (Charles) Kirsch of Sioux Falls, SD; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Delores Schrom of Eron, OH; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

I'm so sorry for your loss. We had a good conversation last Saturday and she shared the time she baby sat my brother Rick, sister Deb and myself while my mom was at the hospital with my new baby brother Tony. She made us a wonderful cake and was making home made whip cream. Needless to say she whipped it and whipped it until it turned into butter. She said my Dad wasn't bothered and said we would just use it on biscuits the next morning. We laughed again over this & I remembered that event--I was 7 years old at the time. She never was able to cook as well as my mom and grandmother--but she always gave it a good try!!
She will never be forgotten-definitely one of a kind.

I have Doris and her family in my thoughts and prayers. I know she will be missed but she is in heaven with Bob and her parents. She was always joking with us kids when we would visit her in Council Bluffs or at our grandparents farm.
