Helen A. Glassmaker
May 8, 1922 - November 3, 2013
Helen Alvina (Steichen) Glassmaker was born on the family farm near Alton, Iowa on May 8, 1922, the daughter of Nicholas and Mary (Henricy) Steichen. She attended St. Mary's School in Alton.

In 1943, Helen met Raymond Glassmaker at the Avalon Ballroom in Remsen. They were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, Iowa on May 2, 1944, and were married for 64 years. They settled on the family farm south of Cleghorn, Iowa, where they lived their entire married life.

Helen passed away on Sunday, November 3, 2013, at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center, at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, beloved daughter, Mary, two brothers, Arnie and Art, and three sisters, Bert, Marion and Catherine.

Helen's greatest accomplishment was raising her large family. Her children and grandchildren fondly remember her homemade bread, pies and other goodies. She had a strong and deep faith. She was a member of Maryhill Visitation Parish until its destruction in 2006.

She is survived by her 13 children and their families: Phyllis (Bob) Walton of King City, CA, Diane (Doug) Henke of Washta, IA, Tom Glassmaker of Cleghorn, Bill (Violet) Glassmaker of Cherokee, Joe (Pat) Glassmaker and Bob (Sherrill) Glassmaker of Marcus, IA, Joan Nicolai of Cleghorn, Michelle (Rich) Moret of South Sioux City, NE, Janet (Mike) Kruse of Sioux City, IA, Dave (Michelle) Glassmaker of Cherokee, Pete Glassmaker of South Sioux City, NE, Chris (Jaime) Wankum of North Sioux City, SD, and Liz (Marc) Mallory of South Sioux City, NE; 26 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; a brother, Francis and four sisters, Rose, Betty, Patty and JoAnne; many other relatives and friends.

I so remember times on the farm with Phyllis and her family. So sorry to hear of your loss. Know that I share and understand your grief. I regret I did not hear of her passing until too late or I would have been at the funeral. God be with you all.

My Grandmother was nothing less than an astonishment. Although her life was largely confined within Cherokee and Plymouth counties, her horizons were more expansive than those of many world travelers. I should know--I've spent much of the past decade changing homes, from Chicago to Istanbul, from New York to Washington DC and, now, Croatia and Germany. I was immensely lucky to see her as often as I did. When I last visited the Glassmaker farm in May, Grandma was clearly in decline, but we were able to share one superb evening of song, which seemed to brighten her mood immensely. Her smile while singing White Christmas in the green of spring was something to behold. I desperately wish that I could be at the funeral tomorrow, and will light a candle for her here in Goettingen. May you rest in peace, Grandma--you lived an abundant life, which touched so many others--your fourteen children and seemingly countless grand- and great-grandchildren, as well as innumerable friends--in the kindest way. I imagine you smiling next to Ray, even as I write this. You were a wonder.
