Violet Kuhlman
April 14, 1926 - February 20, 2014
Violet Vivian Kuhlman, the daughter of Matilda (Vander Hamm) and Henry Baack, was born in Struble, IA on April 14, 1926. Her childhood years were spent in Sioux County. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Ireton, and graduated from Ireton High School in 1943.

On December 3, 1945, Vi was united in marriage to Edward M. Kuhlman at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars, IA. The couple spent their married years in Northwest Iowa, including Le Mars and Hartley, where they owned and operated the cafe for 5 years. They later made their home in Cherokee. Along with raising their four daughters, Vi worked as an office cashier at J.C. Penny's for seven years, and was the Print Shop Manager at MHI in Cherokee for 23 years.

She enjoyed crocheting and embroidering, reading, hunting for asparagus, and playing BINGO. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Following a brief illness, Vi passed away peacefully at her home in Cherokee on Thursday, February 20, 2014, at age 87. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward on December 25, 1986; great-granddaughter, Jillian Marie Smith on April 9, 2001; her brother, Earl Baack on October 10, 2010.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters and their families: Julie Smith of Gaffney, SC, Sharyl (Roger) Larson of Humbolt, IA, Carol (Don) Pitts of Cherokee, and Janet (Gary) Comstock of Overland Park, KS; 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; her brother, Emmet Baack of Sun Lakes, AZ; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Although we haven't been in touch for many years, we have fond memories of Violet and her family. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time. She was a wonderful historian and keeper of the Baack family tree. I, Jackie, treasure these documents and photos and have passed them on to my children.

I only knew Mrs. Kuhlman through her daughter, Jan, with whom I've taught for a number of years. Jan cherished the times she was able to spend with her mother. Although I never met her mother, she must have been an amazing mom because I know she had an amazing daughter in Jan. My condolences to all of the family.
