Michael Waters
September 6, 1926 - March 31, 2014
Michael Francis Waters, the son of Francis and Leone (Carr) Waters, was born in Sioux City, IA on September 6, 1926. When he was 3 years old the family moved from their home in Anthon, IA, to Cherokee, IA, where he received his early education. He graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Cherokee, and later studied Liberal Arts for 2 years at Creighton University in Omaha, NE.

After working at the JC Penny store and Earl May garden center in Cherokee for a time, Mike served his country in the US Army, and then joined with his father and brother, Leonard, in the service station business. Together, Mike and Leonard owned and operated 3 different stations in Cherokee. When he wasn't changing oil or doing tune-ups, Mike loved spending time in his garden. His 'green thumb' produced a yard that was a sight to behold. He was given the 'Yard of Merit' award for Cherokee one year. He achieved his Master Gardner status at age 75. He also enjoyed antique shopping and the companionship of his special Boston terrier, Minny.

Following a brief illness, Mike passed away at Unity Point St. Luke's Health Center in Sioux City, IA, on Monday, March 31, 2014, having reached the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Leonard and Fr. Robert.

Survivors include his sister Mary Jane Waters of Cherokee; his beloved nieces and nephews: Michael (Deb) Waters of Ft. Collins, CO, Anne (Don) Mullison of Lincoln, NE, Julie Currie of Des Moines, Cheri (Tim) Costlow of Van Meter, IA, and Robert (Cari) Waters of Spirit Lake, IA.

I was honored to have met Michael and his beautiful, compassionate family at the hospital's surgery unit. My heart is heavy with sadness for his death yet I pray with happiness for the progress of his beautiful soul in a world of reunion with those who preceded him in death and a place where he is freed of an aging body that presented him with so many tests. I also hope that all of you find your peace as life goes on, while the hole in your heart, left by his death, remains.

Dear Mary Jane and Family and Friends of Mike,
I am sorry to learn of Mike's passing. He was a good man, a good friend, a good worker, kind to everyone, and so very soft-spoken. He was a blessing in our lives.

Family & Friends, No doubt the loss of Mike will be very difficult for many. His mother, Leone, was my father's sister & he was in the grocery business with Frank Waters while in Anthon. I have never met Mike but I remember my dad(Frank) speaking so fondly of all the Waters family............Fran Carr
