Irene Elizabeth Bortscheller, the daughter of Fred and Matilda (Wilberding) Rupp, was born May 18, 1916, in Cherokee, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent near Maryhill where she attended Visitation School. She graduated from Immaculate Conception Catholic High School. She then attended junior college in Cherokee for two years where she earned her associates degree. She worked for the ASC office for four years.

On September 2, 1940, Irene was united in marriage to Claude H. Bortscheller at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, IA. Following their marriage they lived in the Oyens area where they farmed until moving to Marcus where they farmed until their retirement in 1981.

Irene was an active member of the Holy Name Catholic Church. Faith was a major part of Irene’s life and it was evident with the values and beliefs she passed on to her children. Irene and Claude’s first priority was their family. She enjoyed being a homemaker where she cooked, cleaned, and cared for their 9 children.

What a wonderful role mother your mother was to me and many others. I loved visiting your farm and observing your mother in action: her gentleness, her sense of humor, her wonderful cooking, and her willingness to set another place at the table! Ann and I had wonderful adventures together as preteens and teenagers. I am certain your mother passed her love of family on to all of her beautiful children. Love and prayers to all.
