Edward J. Wiemold
April 30, 1921 - December 28, 2014
It must have been a glorious April 30, 1921 in Cherokee, Iowa, the day Frank and Anna welcomed their youngest son, Edward John, into the world on Butterhill Farm, which would be his home until retirement. He grew up near Visitation Maryhill Church, which was his cornerstone, offering educational, religious and spiritual guidance his entire life.

Ed and Arlyce (Schmillen) were married on October 10, 1950. The union lasted 41 years until Arlyce's death in 1991, producing five children.

Farming was Ed's first love, raising cattle, hogs and chickens, along with having many loving dogs.

Pheasants Forever, The Depot Restoration Society, Friends of Conservation were the organizations Ed was most involved in. Cooking (especially chili cook-offs) fishing, woodworking, bake sales, and playing Tripoly were among many of his interests. The St. Louis Cardinals were his greatest passion.

He approached life with 'Witty-Fun', a sparkling personality, and a genuine zest for life. Creative and colorful, Ed never knew a stranger.

Ed passed away peacefully at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center on Sunday, December 28, 2014, at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank in 1960, mother, Anna in 1980, his wife Arlyce in 1991, and a brother, Charles in infancy.

Survivors include 5 children: Sue (Ron) Sutter, Allen, TX, Mary (Bob) McCord, Fairbury, NE, Sherry (Mike) Hittle, Ida Grove, IA, Terry (Cindy) Wiemold, Cherokee, IA, Arlette (Lance) Van Wyhe, Park Rapids, MN; grandchildren: Chuck (Michelle) Sutter, Wautauga, TX, Mike (Lisa) Sutter, Allen, TX, Brett (Leslie) McCord, Aurora, CO, Amber (Marsh) Kelley, Lincoln, NE, Ashley (Mike) Jensen, Crescent, IA, Carmen (Matt) Ohm, Le Mars, IA, Ryan (Michelle) Wiemold, Ames, IA, Korey (Kathleen) Wiemold, Fishers, IN, Mandi (Steve) King, Spencer, IA, Gus Briggs, Louisville, CO, Luke (Jennifer) Van Wyhe, Sioux Falls, SD, Krista (Matthew) Lisbon, Greensbury, PA; also Including 17 great-grandchildren, all whom he loved dearly; his very special friend Dolly Morton; a brother, Joe (Mary Lou) Wiemold, Cherokee,IA, sisters-in-law; Bibs Schmillen, Cherokee, IA, Shirley Brickman of CO; many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be directed to Maryhill Shrine, Pheasants Forever and Friends of Conservation.

Ed lived by St. Francis of Assisi's quote: 'Preach the gospel always, and if necessary, use words.'

I am so sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. I remember the many times I can to your home and helped with the children as the Wiemold clan grew. I always enjoyed being there and your Dad was always so proud of his family, his farm and took me to many things going on at the church.

My thoughts and prayers are with Ed's loved ones. What a great guy! I first met Ed and Arlyce through their friends Don and Jean Needs. They were both so much fun to be around. I was lucky enough to receive several of Ed's woodworking creations in the form of Christmas ornaments. I put them up on my tree every year and think of him. Ed did beautiful work. He was always smiling and ready for a conversation with people. I am glad for the opportunity to know Ed. I will miss the kindness he showed to everyone. God bless you.
