Wilma 'Billie' Martin
November 22, 1923 - September 19, 2016
Wilma "Billie" Maxine Martin, the daughter of Edwin M. and Gladys A. (Green) Hartliep was born November 22, 1923, at Rock Township in Cherokee County, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent near Quimby where she attended school. She graduated from Quimby High School in 1941. After high school, Billie moved to California where she worked as a telegraph operator for Western Union.

On July 21, 1947, she was united in marriage to Ted L.M. Martin in Walnut Creek, CA. Following their marriage, they moved back to Iowa and settled in Cherokee where they owned and operated Martin Interiors for several years.

Billie was a kind hearted person that loved to help anyway she could. She enjoyed singing, gardening, cross stitching, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Most of all, Billie cherished the time spent with her family and friends.

On September 19, 2016, Billie passed away peacefully at her home in Cherokee surrounded by her family at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted L.M. Martin in 1998; parents, Edwin M. and Gladys A. Hartliep; three brothers, Neil (Frieda) Hartliep, Merrill (Veronica) Hartliep, and Allen (Ruth) Hartliep; three sisters, Lois (Robert) Bjorkgren, Phyllis (Vernon) Carrington, and Joyce (Gordon) Thurman.

She will lovingly be remembered by her children: Randi (Mary Duff) Martin, Ricki Rosenthal, Robin (Patrice) Martin, and Rev. Dr. Rene (Dr. Jerry Suls) Martin; seven grandchildren: Katy, Leah, Hannah, Nolan, Nick, Aaron, and Chris; one great-granddaughter, Gwynnie; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

My deepest sympathies to all of you. Your mother was not only my mother's best friend, but a very special friend to our whole family. After mom passed away I know she did so much to help my dad. She and I spent many hours just talking; she had so many stories to tell. Coming back to Cherokee will never be the same.
