Marilyn A. Spindler
June 9, 1922 - January 8, 2017
Marilyn "Babe" Spindler, the daughter of Joseph and Agnes (Trainer) Shea was born June 9, 1922, in Cherokee, IA. Her childhood years were spent in Cherokee where she attended school and graduated from Wilson High School in 1940.

On March 18, 1944, Babe was united in marriage to Crowley Spindler at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. Following their marriage they moved to Marfa, TX where Crowley served with the Army Air Corps. Following his service they farmed near Galva, IA before moving to Carroll in 1971.

Babe was a member of St. Lawrence Parish in Carroll. She was an avid sports fan especially when it came to golf and watching the Chicago Cubs. Her favorite holiday was St. Patrickís Day. She was always up for a good party and she will always be known as the lady that golfed bare foot.

On January 8, 2017, Babe passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Agnes Shea; and her two sisters, Marjorie McCullough and Norrine Shea.

She is survived by her children: Ed and Sherri of Silver City, NM, Jim of Minneapolis, MN, Bill and Sue of Cherokee, IA, Tom and Pam of Cresco, IA, and Kathleen and Duane of Omaha, NE; 11 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; other relatives; and friends.

Marilyn was such a good neighbor. She was a welcoming presence to all the neighborhood children and animals. Her friendly, upbeat, and sometimes instigative personality was entertaining, always. We shall remember her with warmth, affection, and joy.

Dear Spindler Family,
I am so very sorry about your loss. Babe was really a legend and what a lovely life. She inspired me every time I saw her enjoying herself playing golf barefoot at the Cherokee CC. And, luckily I got to see her again about 5 years ago at the Cherokee Cc and my sister Mary took a picture of us sitting on a golf cart. I am sure you have many, many lovely memories of Babe to help you remember her and remember the love she was in your lives and always will be. I send my most sincere condolences. Ann Loughlin
p.s. 2 Bowen sisters who are cousins to Marilyn are here in Palm Desert this winter and I connected with them when their cousin Kevin Woltman died, and I am meeting them again this winter and I know they are also related to Marilyn. They spoke so fondly of their visits to Cherokee to see family through the years.

My mother Leone Murray Bowen and my father Philip Shea Bowen were both first cousins of Marilyn. Whenever my mom and Marilyn got together, they were like little kids laughing and sharing stories. Even as a kid, I could tell she was a life force. My sister Julie would like to make some donation. Sorry we missed the memorial today!

Please accept my sincere sympathy for the loss of your mother. I read her obituary in the Sioux City Journal. She sounds like she lived an interesting life. I knew that someone like you must have had a wonderful mother.
I hope things are good for you in New Mexico. I will be retiring in March; Deb retired last October. We hope to be moving to the Minneapolis area in late spring/early summer.
I often think of all the fun we've had, usually around a baseball diamond. I'm proud to be included in your circle of friends. I wish you all the best.

I feel so fortunate to have known Marilyn while she was a tenant here at the Gardens. It is more difficult to lose someone that was always so involved with the activities in our home. I will never listen to a song by Danny O Donnell without thinking of Marilyn. She could listen to him for hours! God bless you all and rest in peace Babe!
