Mary Jane Waters
April 18, 1935 - June 19, 2017
Mary Jane Waters, the only daughter of Frances and Leone (Carr) Waters was born on April 18, 1935 in Cherokee, IA. She had three brothers: Mike, Lenny, and Bob whom all have preceded her in death.

Mary attended and graduated from Immaculate Conception School in Cherokee and spent the first year out of high school working as a medical stenographer at the MHI in Cherokee. She always remarked that this was her favorite job. During this year she lived with her family in Cherokee and saved money for college.

Mary Jane graduated from Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, IA in 1958 with a Bachelor's of Science degree in physical education. Mary's first assignment after graduation was teaching in Aurelia. From there she went to Paullina and taught for nine years. She then taught in the Cherokee school system for the next 25 years until her retirement.

Mary was an avid golfer. It was not unusual for her to play 18 holes daily after retiring. She experienced her only hole-in-one in 1999. Mary was a lifetime member of I.C. Church. She also enjoyed poker and bridge for years. For many summers Mary enjoyed visits to San Diego to see her brother Bob. The two enjoyed sightseeing in Southern California and side trips to Las Vegas.

Mary will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her brothers Lenny's five children: Michael Waters of Fort Collins, CO, Anne Mullison of Lincoln, NE, Julie Currie of Des Moines, IA, Cheri Costlow of Van Meter, IA, and Bob Waters of Spirit Lake, IA.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Frances and Leone Waters; and three brothers, Mike, Lenny, and Bob Waters.

What a great lady, my first PE teacher at Garfield elementary. I got the presidential physical fitness award she was as proud as me. I believe she was my role model in helping me believe girls could succeed in sports just as much as boys! The ironic part when she had breast cancer she requested I would become her sub for her on her leave. I gladly excepted with honor. Through the following years often seen her in church. What a wonderful lady.. I'm sure our good Lord Jesus is saying to her today, job well done on earth!!!

To family.
I already know, with you, the fine qualities of life lived by your certainly beloved aunt - and, how much she will be missed. - Open, caring, gentle, humble, 'alert', reliable, loving - in short 'solid' in all values. I pray and feel assured, given the above, that she is 'marked' for an Eternal Live.

Mary Jane was a special lady. She and I had many long talks when I was living in Cherokee. We haven't spoken for many years but I still feel the loss of her passing. My condolences to the family. I know she loved each of you dearly.

Prayers and hugs to all of you. I had the privilege to reconnect with Miss Waters a few months ago, (she was my PE teacher many years ago.) She was the sweetest lady, we enjoyed our visits with her and we will miss her sweet smile. Love the sisters! Shari and Marcia

Mary Jane, Betty Thoma and I played golf almost every day during the summer! We would go to golf tournaments when ever possible. At the Primgar tournament Mary Jane had a hole in one! We had so much fun! I haven't played that much golf since. Occasionally Mary Jane, Mike, Ed and I would go to the Pizza Ranch in Marcus! Such good memories we made! Mary Jane was a great person! She will be missed so much! I'm sure the Lord met her with open arms. Peace of the Lord to her family that she thought were the greatest.

The game of golf brought Mary Jane and I together and we were friends everafter. We both looked forward to 'our time' each week spent golfing, at the coffee shop, having lunch, shopping, or just hanging out. Her faith made her this gifted person that was committed to being uplifting, accepting, and nonjudgmental. It's her faith that allowed her to willingly take His hand and accept the journey that was asked of her. She was not afraid...she was ready...and most of all, she knew that she was loved. Our loss of her presence brings grief and sadness, but is a reminder to celebrate and embrace each day. Family was her pride and joy....cherish the memories.
With deepest sympathy,
