Doris Meloy
Doris Anderson Meloy of Larrabee, Iowa died on Monday November 5, 2007 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
She passed away in the manner in which she lived, with swift determination and
grace.
Funeral services will be held
this Saturday November 10, 2007 at 10:30 am at the Immaculate Conception Church
in Cherokee. Visitation will be at the Greenwood Funeral Home Friday from 1:30
P.M. until 9:00 P.M. with the family present from 6 to 8 pm. Donations can be
made to the Cherokee Regional Medical Center Foundation, 300 Sioux Valley Drive, Cherokee,
Iowa 51012.
Doris was born January 5, 1929 to Anna Persson
Anderson and Ralph Elvin Anderson. She
graduated as the salutatorian from Larrabee High
School in 1947.
She attended the University
of Iowa, where she was a
member of Delta Delta Delta
sorority. She married Charles Furlong Meloy in Minneapolis on September 24, 1949 and
completed her education with a B.A. degree from the University of Minnesota
in December 1950. She and Charles then
returned to Larrabee, where Charles and Ralph began
farming in partnership.
Doris was a vibrant, energetic woman who loved and inspired
her family and her many friends. She was
an active community member and volunteer throughout her life. She volunteered in the Larrabee
and Cherokee Schools and enjoyed attending all her
children's many activities. She was an
avid and accomplished bridge player. She
achieved Life Master
Bridge status and also
taught bridge in Adult Education classes for many years. In addition to bridge,
Doris enjoyed entertaining, reading and walking
and, in her later years, picked up golf.
Doris was a member of Immaculate Conception Church where
she served on the Ladies Auxiliary and as a lector. She was a "pink lady" aide at the
Cherokee Mental Health Institute. She
was also an officer and member of many organizations, including The American
Association of University Women, Tri-T, the Red Cross Auxiliary, the Sioux
Valley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Cherokee Arts Council.
She is survived by her five
children: Katherine Moyers (John) of Iowa
City, Jane Wilkens (James) of Scottsdale, Daniel (Mary) of Larrabee,
Nancy Qasim (Imad) of Wilmette, Illinois and
Molly Meloy (Jeff Fitts) of
New York City.
She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Peter and Anna Moyers,
Sarah and Patrick Wilkens, Michael Meloy, and Isa and Noor Qasim.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Charles.
