Jean Hogue

Jean DeMeris (Bass) Hogue, the daughter of William W. and Blanche O. (Ulstead) Bass, was born in Marcus, Iowa on March 11, 1923. Her early childhood years were spent in Marcus, and she graduated from Marcus High School in 1940. She then attended the National Business Technical School in Sioux City. Following her schooling, Jean worked as a secretary for attorney Mark Bancroft. She then headed to California during WWII, and worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" and as a record keeper for the enlistees. Upon returning to Marcus after the war she started dating her future husband, Leland Hogue. The two were married in Lincoln, NE on July 28, 1947. Early on, Jean devoted her time to taking care of her home and all things involved in being the busy mother of five. Later on she partnered with Leland in operating the Hogue Jewelry Store. Jean passed away peacefully at her home in Marcus on Friday, February 22, 2013, at age 89. Leland led the way for her on November 21, 2012. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a half-sister Marguerite (Bass) Petry, half-brothers Laurence Bass and Charles Bass, a brother William Bass, Jr., and two sons, Jeff and Bill. She will forever remain in the hearts of her children, Brian Hogue and his wife Jackie of Carroll, IA, Dave Hogue and his wife Renee of Omaha, NE, Jill and her husband Mark Albert of Sioux City, IA, and Jan and her husband Mark Bauer of Marcus; her nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law Sue and Craig Dorr of Marcus.
