In Memory of

Gerald K. Madsen

August 23, 1932 - December 24, 2010
Gerald Knut Madsen, the son of Edwin A. and Marie C. (Sheridan) Madsen, was born August 23, 1932 near Alta, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in the Rembrandt area. He attended school at Lincoln Lee School and graduated from Rembrandt High School in 1949. Following his schooling he entered the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he served with the 521st Transit Company stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. On January 28, 1956, Gerald was united in marriage to Marjorie A. Lenz at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux Rapids, IA. To this union they were blessed with seven children. Following their marriage they moved to Rembrandt where he worked as a dairy farmer. After a few years, they moved to a farm north of Aurelia, where they farmed for many years. Due to an injury, the couple moved off the farm and relocated to Cherokee, where he worked at Wilson's Packing Plant until his retirement. Gerald then went to work part time for Drug Town until 2010, where he delivered medications which brought joy to Gerald and to the customers he brought medications to. In his free time Gerald delivered mobile meals and ran a charitable shuttle service where he would drive people to their doctor appointments, airports, and virtually anywhere they needed to go, often times traveling several hundred miles to their destinations. He genuinely loved to help people and considered everyone a friend. He was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee and a member of the Knights of Columbus where he was a 4th Degree Knight and served as a former 3rd degree District Deputy. Gerald loved woodworking, playing cards, watching sports, reading, going to coffee with his friends, and driving around the countryside looking for wild turkey and deer. Most of all, Gerald loved being around family and friends, especially his grandchildren which he enjoyed taking them fishing at Spring Lake Park. On December 24, 2010, Gerald passed away unexpectedly at his home in Cherokee at the age of 78. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin A. and Marie Madsen; and three brothers: Dale, Edwin P., and Duane (Dick) Madsen. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Madsen of Cherokee, IA; seven children: Steven Madsen of Sioux City, IA, Kenneth (Lisa) Madsen of Brookline, NH, Karen (Scott) Monical of Carroll, IA, Katherine (Jeremy) Williams of Omaha, NE, John (Angelena) Madsen of Lisbon, IA, Roger Madsen of Omaha, NE, and Angela (John Charles "J.C") Gaukel of Omaha, NE; six brothers and sisters: Merle Madsen of Weslaco, TX, Maxine Launderville of Storm Lake, IA, Jean Madsen of Lakefield, MN, Clarence Madsen of Okabena, MN, Robert Madsen of Heron Lake, MN, and Melvin Madsen of Laurens, IA; 15 grandchildren: Misty (Monical) Jones, Michael Patricola, Jessica Monical, Alexander Madsen, Anastasia Madsen, Christina Madsen, Elizabeth Madsen, Nicholas Madsen, Tatiana Madsen, Victoria Madsen, Virginia Madsen, Madeline Gaukel, Christopher Madsen, Amy Madsen, and Nermeen Abdel Latif; four great-grandchildren: Karlee, Kelin, Kloee, and Kamee Jones; several nieces; nephews; other relatives; and many friends.

My heart aches for you especially during the holidays it's such an awful time to have something happen. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family and my sympathies as well. I learned about it when I read it in the paper yesterday..shock to my system and to yours I'm sure. Please know I am thinking of you. God Bless.”

“Gary and I can not express how sad we feel that Jerry had to leave all of you and us. After watching the video tribute to him, I realized how much he loved life and each of you his family and what a full life Jerry had. You and we will miss him so much. We grieve for our loss but rejoice in his being with his creator now...never to hurt again. We extend our thoughts to you across the miles as we are visiting our son and family in Seattle. We will be in touch with you Marge, as soon as we return. All of you know that you are in our prayers and we loved Jerry. Barb and Gary Bowers ”

“I was so surprised to hear about Jerry's death. I am so happy that we all made it to lunch on Dec. 3rd. We lost a fun loving kind thoughtful and giving gentleman. I will bring up the picture that was taken the day we had lunch. Also very anxious to meet all the children again. It has to be at 30 plus years since I have seen them. You are in my prayers. JAN”
