Cecil K. Akin

Cecil K. Akin, the son of Jess and Mary (Sargent) Akin was born December 10, 1921, in Cherokee, IA. His childhood years were spent in Cherokee. At age 5, his family moved to Ida Grove, IA where he received his education. Following school, Cecil enlisted in the United States Marines. He served in Iwo Jima and Guadal Canal where he earned three purple hearts and a bronze star. Following his honorable discharge from the military, Cecil worked as a train conductor for the Illinois Central Railroad for 20 years. At the time of his hiring, he was the youngest train conductor ever to work for railroad. Cecil enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing, boxing, gardening, and cooking. Most of all Cecil enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. On November 5, 2011, Cecil passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jess and Mary Akin; three brothers, Jess, Donald, and Bobby Akin; and two sisters, Helen Hansen and Letha Akin. He is survived by one sister, Dorothy Church of Sioux City, IA; as well as several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee.
