In Memory of

John Eischen Jr.

August 14, 1922 - March 23, 2012
Lawrence Eischen, Jr., the son of Margaret (George) and John Eischen, Sr., was born on August 14, 1922, on the family farm in Rock Township near Maryhill, Iowa. He was the youngest of 10 children. He attended country school, and then graduated from Cherokee Public High School in 1939. He was united in marriage to Josephine Meier on November 21, 1944, in Bow Valley, Nebraska. They made their home near Meriden, Iowa, where they farmed and raised their four children: Janice, Jerome, Jerald, and Jeffrey. Farming was John's passion--he especially loved raising livestock. He spent some time working for the Cherokee Livestock Sales, as well as Quaker Oats and Fredricksen Grain in Meriden. He was an avid fisherman, at times taking trips to Minnesota and Canada. He had been a 4-H leader for many years, and served on the Cleghorn Library Board. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church where he sang in the choir, and at many funerals. In 2006, when his health began to fail, John was lovingly cared for by the staff at Careage Hills Nursing Home in Cherokee. He passed away there on March 23, 2012, at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Josephine on November 8, 2001; two sisters, Kathryn (Laurence) Kohns and Helen Eischen; seven brothers and their wives, Carl (Marie), Sylvester (Edna), George (Harriet), Clarence (Beryl), Edward (Dorothy), Harry (Celestine), and Freeman (Bernice). He is survived by his children: Janice of Cincinnati, OH, Jerome of Cherokee, IA, Jerry of Spencer, IA, and Jeffery (Reg'ee Harris) of Omaha, NE; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee.

“I was saddened to learn of Uncle John's death. Owing to the miles which separated us--my growing up in Sioux Falls--we never formed a close relationship. I very much regret that.

My last visit with John was in February 2011, when I was in Cherokee for my godmother's funeral. I was impressed with how happy he was at the nursing home, and with what good care he was receiving there. He shared some stories of both Eischen and Cherokee history, helping me appreciate his role as senior historian for the family.

Uncle John's passing closes a generational chapter in the history of the Eischens, an event accompanied not only by sadness, but also a sense of pride in the fine legacy left by the children of John and Margaret.

Conveying my heartfelt sympathy to Janice, Jerome, Jerry, and Jeff.

“I will miss John whenever I am at Careage Hills. For the past 3 years I have taken a couple of my horses to the home to share with the residents. John enjoyed them more than anyone. And asked me about them every day I worked. John was/is truly a great man and joy to be around. Remember all your great times with him. With deepest sympothy, Jerri Bailey”

“To Janice, Jerome, Jerry and Jeff,
I am sadden to see that your Dad passed away yesterday.

Your Dad was one of the 1st adult people I meant when we move to Cherokee in the summer of 1967 and I would help my Dad with unloading railroad cars of lime in Meriden. Your Dad worked in the old elevator then, basically I believed he ran the place.

Over the years as I and my family were growing up , I remember coming out to the farm to shoot off fireworks brought home from SD for the 4th of July, checking on the pony, ie: Pinto my Dad won and your family kept and cared for us and scooping snow out of the long driveway after those winter storms when you parents would be snowed in.

I found it nice that our Father's became roommates at the nursing home during the last years of their lives. They both seem to have things in common and I always enjoyed seeing your Dad when I was there to visit my Dad.

Now, I sure the two of them are reunited again, in the hereafter, where there is no pain and many love ones to be with that had gone before them.

You have our prayers for Jr, your Dad and many happy memories of time spent with him. ”
