In Memory of

Dorothy V. Murray

August 29, 1929 - December 28, 2013
Dorothy (Voss) Murray, the daughter of John and Johanna (Hoffroggee) Voss, was born August 29, 1929, in Massena, IA. Her childhood years were spent in Massena, and she graduated from Massena High School in 1946. Following graduation she worked at the Dime Store in Atlantic, IA, for eight years. On October 22, 1950, she was united in marriage to Arlo Murray. Along with taking care of her home and family, she worked as a bookkeeper for the local Phillips 66 station. The family moved to Cherokee in 1967. Dorothy enjoyed playing pinochle, golf, and watching sports--especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. Spending time with family was very important to her. She was immensely proud of her great-grandson. She was a faithful member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Alter Guild. She graciously offered her time to help deliver Meals on Wheels. Dorothy passed away unexpectedly at her residence on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, Irene Michaels and Ella Holste, an infant brother Carl Voss and a granddaughter, Tegan Murray. She is survived by a son and his family, Jeff and Evelyn Murray of Worthington, MN, grandson John Murray of Worthington, granddaughter Nicole (Michael) Metz of Rushmore, MN, and her great-grandson, Brycen Metz; two brothers, Raymond W. Voss of Denver, CO and Elmer (Norma) Voss of Treynor, IA; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday, January 3, 2014, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee.
Pastor Jane Johnston
Visitation will begin at noon on Friday, at the church with the family present until the time of the service.

“I have been lucky to have known Dorothy for over a decade and am so glad for those years. She was so kind, so thoughtful, so understanding, and so enthusiastic about many things. Since I am a Minnesotan, we enjoyed cheering for opposite sides of Gopher/Hawkeye games. She also loved her grandchildren very much and shared with me her pride in them many times. I feel very lucky to have known Dorothy. I thank Jeff and his family for sharing her with me.”

“My thoughts and prayers are with your family in this time of loss. I was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church growing up in Cherokee. I got to know Dorothy when I bought her Blue Thunderbird back in the early 80's. She took great care of that car, and it was my favorite! Dorothy was such a nice lady. May you find comfort in all of your memories. God bless. ”
