Arlene Dorothy Cedar was born on December 26, 1933, in Cleghorn, IA, to Lester and Grace (Gilbert) Kirchoff. Her family lived in the Cleghorn area, and she graduated from Cleghorn High School in 1951. She worked at Central Trust & Savings Bank in Cherokee before starting her family.
