Bill was born to Lawrence and Evelyn (Mosier) McLaughlin in Cherokee, Iowa on June 15, 1924. Bill was an electrical contractor with his father before and after World War II. He served in the US Navy and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands during WWII.
Bill married Verna E. Mueller on June 28, 1942, and they retired to Florida in January 1987. The couple were members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee before becoming members of Bethel Lutheran Church in Clearwater, Florida after their move south.
Bill enjoyed fishing, woodworking, antiques, and going to garage sales and flea markets.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Verna; a daughter, Linda Marie McLaughlin; his parents; his brother Robert McLaughlin; grandson Bruce Irvin Strand; and great-grandson Michael Wayne McLaughlin.
He is survived by his four children: Marcia Phipps of Thornhill, Tennessee; Robert (Linda) McLaughlin of Akron, Iowa; Don McLaughlin of Davenport, Iowa; and Sylvia (Bruce) strand of Clearwater, Florida; 17 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great grandchildren; a sister, June (Jim) Gibbs of Monroeville, Pennsylvania; and many friends and relatives.
Interment for Bill and Verna will be at a later date in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 5, 2017, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
A duel burial for William and his wife Verna will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery following the service.
Military rites will be conducted by the Cherokee V.F.W. L.A. Wescott Post 2253 and the Cherokee American Legion.
