In Memory of

Warren G. Held

April 4, 1923 - January 6, 2010
Warren Gregory Held, the son of Benjamin and Viola (Croston) Held was born April 4, 1923 in Hinton, IA. Warren along with his siblings spent their youth showing cattle and he was active in Plymouth County 4-H. The highlight of his 4-H career was showing the Grand Champion In showroom at the Chicago International Livestock Show in 1936. He graduated from Hinton High School in 1941 where he was a member of all sports teams. Warren attended Morningside College where he earned letters in basketball and football. In 1942 he left school to help farm and then served in the Military with the Army 1st. Calvary Unit. He returned to Morningside in 1948 to play football for George Allen, who was in his 1st year as the schools head coach. When a line injury ended his football career he coached Jr. Varsity basketball at Morningside. He graduated in 1951. On September 13, 1952, Warren was united in marriage to Sharon Taylor in Goldfield, IA. To this union three children were born: Gregory, Holly, and Heidi. Following their marriage, Warren began his career in radio broadcasting at KSCJ and later at KICD. The highlight of those years was announcing the Big Bands at the Roof Garden. In 1958 he joined the Ralston Purina Company as a salesman and in 1960, the Lundell Manufacturing Company in Cherokee. In 1982 he opened a short line machine company and traveled to several states. He was a salesman until his illness in 1998. That same year Warren was inducted into the Morningside M Club Hall of Fame. Warren enjoyed life to the fullest always having a joke or two, to share with friends. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Toastmasters, Kiwanis, and Cherokee Community Theatre. He enjoyed being in musicals and loved to sing and act. He was devoted to his large family of seven sisters and two brothers and their families. He also enjoyed attending the many activities of his children and grandchildren and was always proud of them. He loved to visit with people and enjoyed his years at the Villa making many new friends. He will be remembered by many as being Cherokee's Santa Claus for many years. On January 6, 2010, Warren passed away at the Villa in Cherokee, IA, at the age of 86. His sense of humor was always something to look forward to each and every time he visited the Stratton house.

“My sympathy, care and prayer, extended to you all.
FYI. I left the home area the of Warren's passing in an attempt to 'beat the severe winter storm' that was at hand. It took two days of driving to do so!
Anyhow, please be assured of my now awareness of your loss as expressed above with a continuing care and prayer for you in this time of really but a'temporary' separation from your Beloved. May he rest in Peace and patiently await your heavenly family REUNION.. in His Love and Eternal Care..”

“I'm so sorry that I can't be there to share my condolences in person. We will all miss Warren at the Held family reunions... his jokes, his stories, his memory of the Held family history. I will miss Warren's positive outlook on life and lively spirit. What a great uncle.
Hope that you will find comfort with family and friends who are close by, but know that those of us far away will be thinking about and praying for you.
Karen, Rod, Kjersti and Sissel”

“I never met Warren Held but I am certain he knew my father, Alex Pelelo. My father attended Morningside College 1947-51 after serving as a Marine during the war and also graduated in 1951. Like Warren, my dad played football for George Allen when he came here to coach. I happen to have my dad's copy of the 1951 Sioux which was the Morningside annual at the time. I looked up Warren's senior picture just now. Truly a handsome young man!

My best wishes and sincere condolences for your loss.”

“Dear Sherry, Greg and Family,
I am very sorry to hear of Warren's passing and extend my condolences to all of your family. You are all in my prayers even though it has been decades since I have seen any of you. Warren is remembered as a valuable contributor to the welfare of the Methodist Church and an active participant in Cherokee community affairs. He always greeted us with a very warm and broad smile to wish us well. Our thoughts are with you all at this time of transition but you can take reassurance that Warren is in God's hands and His love will enfold you during any time of need. God Blesses you all, Mark and Ramona Cunningham, Omaha.
