Alice Lucille Schissel

February 17, 1929 — January 1, 2023

Alice Lucille (Clark) Schissel, the daughter of Henry N. and Ada May (Bowker) Clark, was born in Cherokee, Iowa on February 17, 1929. She lived on the family farm until her father passed away in March, 1938, from Scarlet Fever. Her mother then moved the family to Cherokee, where Alice attended school at Immaculate Conception, graduating from high school in May, 1947. Immediately following her graduation, she began working at Cherokee State Bank. Alice enjoyed her time at the bank.

On June 2, 1948, Alice was united in marriage to James Schissel at IC Catholic Church in Cherokee. They made their home and raised their family of six children, in Cherokee. Alice possessed a keen intellect, was very creative and forward-thinking, and loved to read. She had a natural concern for those less fortunate, perhaps due to her own childhood loss, and was a compassionate individual. She loved a good cup of tea, writing cards and letters to family, friends and sometimes politicians, and working in her garden.  She tended to the peony bush, from which her wedding bouquet was picked, for 68 years.  Alice was active in the IC parish, teaching CCD and serving on the CD of A. Her faith was very important to her.  She also served as a 4-H Leader and helped with Cub Scouts. Jim and Alice took their children on frequent vacations, and many fond memories were made on long, cross-county road trips. Alice was devoted to her family, including her mother and sister, Delores, and her children and grandchildren.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jim (2016); her son Jed G. Schissel (2012); in-laws Joseph and Rose Schissel;  brothers Howard, Donald and Charles, and sister Delores Clark. She is survived by one sister-in-law, Elise Clark of Ashburn, VA.

Her memory lives on though her five daughters, Sharon (Jon) Lemke of Iowa City, IA, Susan (Doug) Behrens of Whitewater, WI, Jane Schissel of Denver, CO, Mary Letsche of Dubuque, IA, and Jean (Scott) Horan of Waterloo, IA; nine grandchildren Anissa, Adam, Brooke, Paige, Elisabeth, Jack, Amanda, Jessica and Christian; and nine great-grandchildren, Christopher, Lilly, Jacob, Luke, Zoey, Gavin, Charlotte, Theodore, and Evelyn.
