Bonnie A. Smith

October 25, 1927 — December 25, 2016

Bonita "Bonnie" Ann (Schissel) Smith, the daughter of John and Mary (Carey) Sand was born on October 25, 1927, and was raised on the family farm outside of Marcus. She graduated from Marcus High School where she loved twirling the baton in the marching band. She has always loved to sing and dance and had a fun-loving personality. After high school, she attended x-ray technology school in Dubuque, Iowa. When she returned to Marcus, she met and married a handsome Navy man named Julian "Hooley" Schissel on August 5, 1947, and moved to Cherokee. Together they had five children. Hooley died in 1973, and Bonnie married Howard C. Smith of Quimby, Iowa on September 5, 1977. She moved from town back to the farm, and she loved every minute of it. She was always at home on the farm where she enjoyed gardening and raising beautiful roses and other lovely flowers. She was active in her church as a Eucharistic Minister and belonged to the Ladies Guild where she helped with church dinners and other church activities. She also taught CCD classes for many years. Bonnie loved to bake and make candy, and she was good at it. She would bake and decorate delicious birthday cakes for her grandchildren and would make an Easter Bunny cake for every Easter dinner. Holidays were her favorite times of the year, and her house and yard would be festively decorated for each and every one. Bonnie was preceded in death by her husbands, Julian Schissel in 1973, and Howard Smith in 2004; her parents, John and Mary (Carey) Sand; two grandchildren, Jason Imwiehe and Matt Schissel; brothers, Merle, Ray, Bob, and Paul Sand; sisters, Evelyn Krause, Margaret Bjork, and Bette Horstman.
