Charlie Kranig

April 3, 1942 — November 14, 2015

Charles 'Charlie' Raymond Kranig (a.k.a. Little Buddy), the son of Ray and Louise (Broderson) Kranig, was born near Wagner, SD on April 3, 1942. His early childhood years were spent in Wagner, where he attended the local schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, and served with the Military Police in Germany. He was honorably discharged in October of 1962 after serving two years. Charlie was united in marriage to Carolyn Medricky on April 5, 1960. Following his discharge from the Army, Charlie and Carolyn returned to South Dakota. They were blessed with three children, Cindy, Chuckie and Candy. Charlie then found work as a farmhand, so the family settled on a farm north of Cleghorn, Iowa. He married Phyliss Ames on March 11, 1987, and Charlie was blessed with another family. The couple made their home in Cleghorn, where Charlie worked as a grain handler for the Co-op Elevator. He continued there until he was disabled as a result of injuries he sustained during an accident on the job. When he wasn't doing woodworking, refinishing antique furniture, or attending a NASCAR race, Charlie enjoyed shooting the breeze with his good neighbors, Tony and JoAnn, and the gang at JB's in Marcus. He was a proud member of the Cleghorn Fire Department for more than 30 years. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had an extensive collection of hats, and a treasury of pins to put on them. Having personally experienced the loss of two children to Cystic Fibrosis, he was involved in several fund-raising events over the years to help raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Charlie passed away on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Louise; two children, Cindy and Chuckie Kranig; a sister, Phyllis Crichton; brother-in-law, David Blaha; and a nephew, Troy Crichton. Survivors include his children: Candy and John Hahn of Paullina, Danae and Bruce Dreckman of Marcus; two stepsons, Todd and Kristi Ames, and Jeff and Kim Ames, all of Marcus; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Amy and Josh Douglas and their son Ean, Trent and Kelly Wester and sons Levi and Wyatt, Mark and Melinda Wester and sons Jordan, Jaxtan and Asher, Kari and Cody Stika, Leta Wester, Emily, Brandon and Ryan Dreckman, Kylee and Shana Ames; his siblings: Retta Blaha of Sioux Falls, SD, Willie and Carol Kranig of Greeley, CO, Patty Countryman-Kranig of Mesa, AZ; a brother-in-law, Curt Crichton of Vermillion, SD; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
