Delbert Duane Medick

September 12, 1932 — January 24, 2020

Delbert Duane Medick, the son of Andrew and Edna (Noah) Medick was born on September 12, 1932 at the family farm south of Cleghorn, IA. His childhood years were spent on the farm where he attended country school until 8th grade. He then attended and graduated from Cleghorn High School in 1952.

On August 25, 1952, Delbert was united in marriage to Betty Roetman and to this union three children were born.  Following their marriage they lived in Cleghorn for nine years where Delbert helped work on the family farm, helped his aunt and uncle at their restaurant, and worked on the MHI farm milking cows in Cherokee.  In the spring of 1961, the family moved to a farm west of Larrabee.  Delbert and Betty continued farming and growing and improving the dairy herd until their retirement.

In 1992, the family was awarded Premier Guernsey Breeder at the Clay County Fair for the first time.  There were several more honors and awards in the years after.  In 2003 Delbert and Betty were recognized by the Iowa Guernsey Breeders as one of the state’s Pioneer Breeders, always working to improve the breed.

Delbert was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. He enjoyed collecting farm toys, especially Allis Chalmers, and belt buckles, taking the family to Alta to watch the car races, and telling deer stories.  Most of all he loved being on the farm and spending time with family and friends.

On January 24, 2020, Delbert passed away at Accura Health in Cherokee at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Medick, in 2011; parents, Andrew and Edna Medick; one brother, Norman Medick and his wife Colleen; and one brother-in-law, Jim Knittel.

He will lovingly be remembered by his children; Terry (Glenn) Borkenhagen of White Bear Lake, MN, Duane (Nancy) Medick of Elkhart, IA, and David (Brenda) Medick of Cherokee, IA; one brother, Bernie (Kay) Medick of Kansas City, MO; one sister-in-law, Mary Jo Knittel of Seattle, WA, grandchildren: Jennifer (Rich) Carlson, Rev. Daniel (Jessica) Borkenhagen, Kim Medich, Katie (David) Van Der Beek, and Adam (Sarah) Medick; great-grandchildren, Reuel, Kjel, and Damaris Borkenhagen, Simeon Carlson, and David Van Der Beek; he is also survived by other nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.
