Hilda W. Carstens

Hilda W. Carstens was born on December 12, 1922 to Andrew and Veronica (Cook) Reinert on a farm near Maryhill. She attended school in Maryhill through the 8th grade. On April 4, 1940 Hilda was united in marriage to Ernest Carstens; they were married for 65 years. They raised 10 children on a farm one and a half miles south of Quimby. In their retirement years, Ernie and Hilda lived in the town of Quimby for nearly 40 years. Hilda was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. She actively participated in fundraising for the new building. She supported her community through various activities, visiting the sick and housebound. She enjoyed gardening, particularly her flowers. She enjoyed making quilts for her grandchildren and she enjoyed walking. She was a very loving mother and grandmother, always available to watch her grandchildren. Hilda had 112 direct descendents. She had 10 children, 30 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren. On March 8, 2013, Hilda, 90 years old, passed away suddenly and peacefully at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center with her family members by her bedside. She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Carstens in 2005, her son, Joe in 1983, grandson, Steve Pratt, granddaughter, Kathryn Burns, sisters: Rose, Lorraine and Rita and brothers: LeRoy, Cyril, Clarence, Edward and Lawrence. Hilda is survived by her children: Roberta (Richard) Mitchell of Seattle, WA; Molly Hill of Quimby, Gary (Mary Jo) Carstens of Quimby; Bob (Dot) Carstens of Quimby; Richard Carstens of Quimby; Mary (Doug) Schau of Ida Grove; Donna (Tom) Burback of Storm Lake; Butch (Connie) Carstens of Quimby; Dave (Connie) Carstens of Cushing; Alvina (Norman) Groth of Rockford, IL who lived with the family through all of her high school years; a brother Vern (Vonnie) Reinert of Ankeny; sister, Carrie Reinert of Spencer; a sister-in-law, Bea Reinert of Marcus; many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee.

VISITATION
Visitation will begin at 2PM Monday, with the family present from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Monday night at the Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee. There will be a 7PM prayer service Monday night at the funeral home.
