James Anthony Schallau

April 15, 1938 — November 10, 2009

Jim was born April 15, 1938, the seventh of ten children of Irvin and Joye (Tripplet) Schallau in Sutherland, Iowa. He attended Quimby grade school, transferred to Meriden in 8th grade, and graduated from there in 1956. He married his lifetime sweetheart Lois Ann Rupp on September 12, 1959 at Visitation Church, Maryhill. Jim worked in the auto and agricultural parts business, beginning his career in 1959 with Brown Auto Supply in Cherokee and in Mapleton from 1961 to 1965. He was then employed in Cherokee with Motor Parts Sales, Cherokee Implement and Brown Chevrolet/Buick Company for many years. In 1977, Jim and partners Bob Hirschman and Craig Good opened South Side Supply where he worked until retirement in 2000. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his wife, traveling, playing golf, playing cards as well as cribbage with grandchildren or anyone else on hand. Until his failing health no longer allowed, he worked part-time for Valley Pharmacy and for Aerus/Electrolux in sales and service. As a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Jim was active as a lector, usher, Eucharistic minister and served on the Religious Education Board in his younger and healthier years. He was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He served for many years on the City Board of Adjustments, and on Quimby Golf Club Board and several Automotive Industry Boards. He is survived by Lois, his loving and cherished spouse of 50 years; a son Steven James, wife Kathy and their children Stephanie, Tiffany and Emily of Iowa City; a daughter Kathy Ann and her children Alex and Casey James of Henry, Illinois; a son Gary Joseph, wife Molly and their children Tyler, Kathryn, Kyle and Brady of LeMars; son Bradley Paul and wife Traci of Canton, Illinois. Jim is also survived by brothers Irvin (Shirley) of Steamboat Rock, Richard (Rita) of Spencer, Ronald of Scottsdale, Arizona and Michael (Dayle) of Mankato, Minnesota and sister, Patricia Carson of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He is also survived by one brother in-law Robert Quam of Winnetka, California and one sister-in-law, Nancy Schallau of Onawa. Also, many loving nieces, nephews and other relatives as well as countless dear friends. Jim will be greatly missed for his steadfast family love, kindness, gentle spirit, generous heart, and his gift of finding the best qualities in the people he met. His enduring acceptance of his many illnesses was a model of great patience for all who knew him. His wonderful laugh and precious smile linger in his family and friends memories. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Shirley Sherill, Rita Peck and Loretta Quam; one brother, John Schallau; nephew Chad Schallau and niece Misty Bailey and many aunts and uncles. Memorials may be directed to the Omaha Servants of Mary or Cherokee Regional Medical Center Hospice.
