Joan B Steele

Joan B. Andersen Steele passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2016, date at her home. She was born on March 15, 1926 in Sioux Rapids, Iowa to Byrdie (Chalma) and Irving Andersen. Joan graduated from Wilson High School in Cherokee, IA in 1944. After high school, she attended Presbyterian Hospital for Nursing in Denver from 1944-1947. Following graduation, she worked as a nurse in San Monica, CA for two years and in Sitka, Alaska for the Department of Interior. She married Gordon Harrison Steele on June 2, 1950 in Cherokee, IA. Joan was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church and was a deaconess. She was an avid gardener and known for her roses. She was active with the Girl Scouts, and enjoyed bridge, but her true passion was cooking, and she loved to entertain. She attended cooking schools in Stowe, VT; Rich's in Atlanta and graduated from LaVarenne Cooking School in Paris, France. She opened the Elmdene Cooking School in 1984 in Cherokee and had classes for many years. She had noted guest chefs including Natalie Dupree and Julia Child. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother, Thomas C. Andersen. She is survived by daughter Martha Steele (Steve Edwards) of Overland Park, KS, brother Paul D. Andersen of Hattiesburg, MS, sisters-in-law Marguerite France Andersen (Thomas) of Orange Beach, FL, and Harriet Steele (Washburn) of Carlsbad, CA, along with nieces and nephews. 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 29th at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee.
