Keith Wegner

August 21, 1942 — August 14, 2019

Keith was born on August 21, 1942 along with his twin brother to parents Walter L. Wegner and Clara (Henningsen) Wegner in Marshalltown Iowa.

Keith grew up on a farm near Gladbrook, IA and attended Gladbrook grade school and high school, graduating in 1960. Keith then entered the Iowa Army National Guard serving basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO and Fort Sill, OK for howitzer training. Returning home, Keith helped his father farm and completed a 3.5 year Iowa National Guard program from which Keith was honorably discharged. During this time, Keith also attended college at Waldorf Junior College in Forrest City, IA. He transferred to Iowa State University and earned his bachelor of science degree in biology. During college at Iowa State, he sold Wear-ever cookware on the side and it was a fellow salesman and his wife who introduced Keith to Carol Lynn Petsel. Carol and Keith were married in Des Moines, IA on March 29, 1969. Married for 40 years, Keith and Carol deeply loved each other. Carol was the love of his life and his favorite times were being with her.  To this marriage, they were blessed with two children.

Keith received a teaching certificate and moved to Omaha in 1970 where Keith and Carol both taught at St. Pius X school, Keith teaching 7thand 8thgrade science. After a year, Keith started working at Firestone tire and rubber company retread shop at night while student teaching during the day working toward a teaching license. He worked for Firestone as a sales assistant manager in Omaha and then transferred to a sales manager position in Cherokee, IA. He worked for Firestone for a total of 14 years. Keith then started working with Bomgaars. He truly enjoyed both his work and the friendships he developed with his co-workers and customers. Keith worked full time with Bomgaars for 31 years until his illness developed during the summer of 2019.

Keith was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church serving as a Eucharistic minister, participating in prayer groups and bible studies, and serving with the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed studying about Jesus and the Bible. Keith enjoyed gardening, visiting with neighbors and friends, playing cards, camping, hunting for a good bargain sale, and wood working - particularly with the aromatic cedar wood from a tree he had in his yard.  Keith greatly enjoyed family vacations to visit extended family which usually included a trip to the beach for some beach combing. He loved being with and was very proud of his family, particularly adoring his grandchildren and attending their activities.

Keith will be lovingly remembered by: his twin brother Kermit Wegner and his wife Mary Kay Wegner, brother-in-law Don Winters, brother-in-law George Fritz, brothers and sisters-in-law Joe and Pat Mills, and Lee and Ruth Petsel.

Left to cherish Keith’s memory are son Brian (Bridget) and daughter Elizabeth (Carl) and five adoring grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and special friend Helen Greenhalgh. He is also survived by several cousins in Western Iowa.

Keith was proceeded in death by his beloved wife Carol (Petsel) Wegner, older brother Gerald and his wife Marjorie, older brother Carroll and his wife Marlys, older sister Raena Winters, and sister-in-law Marlene Fritz.

Keith would like to thank his family and friends for their love and support over the years. The family requests that memorials given in Keith’s honor be directed to the American Cancer Society.
