Lillie M. Keller

August 19, 1921 — July 23, 2017

Lillie M. (Riner) Kelly, the daughter of Martha (Griffin) and Theodore Riner, was born in Opequon District, WV, on August 19, 1921. She grew up in West Virginia, and graduated from Hedgesville High School with the class of 1940. She married George Keller on May 29, 1950, in Martinsburg, WV. The couple eventually relocated to Cherokee, where George was involved with the building of the radio tower for KCHE. They made Cherokee their new home, and Lillie soon became active in her community through the VFW Auxiliary, the Wellspring Group at SVMH, and St. Paul's United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Esther Circle. Lillie loved little children. She babysat for many local families through the years. She would get very excited when youngsters would come to visit her at the nursing home. Whenever possible, she enjoyed going on outings and car rides, and eating at Pizza Hut. She was an avid sports fan, and faithfully followed the Cherokee Braves. Some of her other favorites were the Iowa State Cyclones, the Minnesota Vikings football and Twins baseball. Lillie passed away at Accura Healthcare in Cherokee on Sunday, July 23, 2017, having reached the age of 95 years, 11 months, 4 days. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, and several of her siblings. Survivors include many relatives back in West Virginia, and close friends from Cherokee, Janet Lucas, Fran Briggs, and Barb Volkert.
