Mabel Marie Parrott

December 26, 1921 — July 24, 2018

Mabel Marie (Gordon) Parrott was born in Meriden, Iowa on December 26, 1921, to Walter and Mabel (Munster) Gordon. She grew up in Meriden and graduated from Meriden High School.  Following graduation she worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone in Cherokee, and during this time met Robert “Bob” Parrott whom she married in 1944.  The two made their home on a farm near Aurelia. They were blessed with three daughters, Linda, Roberta “Bobbi” and Carol.

Mabel kept busy with her growing family and helping Bob with the farming.  Eventually she began to work outside the home as well.  For several years she was the receptionist and assistant to the dentist in Aurelia. When the dentist relocated she became the secretary to the Principal, and later, secretary to the Superintendent at Aurelia High School. She enjoyed working at the school and getting to know so many students and watching them grow up and graduate.   Mabel and Bob liked playing cards and were members of an Afton Township Card Club. After retirement Mabel learned how to play Bridge and participated in many area Bridge games. Other hobbies included working crossword puzzles, cross-stitch, and making lap quilts. Many of her family and friends received one of her handmade quilts when new babies were born.

With advancing age Mabel eventually decided that she should move to an assisted living facility and chose to reside at Accura Healthcare in Cherokee.  As her health began to fail, she moved to the long term care portion of the facility and passed away on Tuesday, July 24, 2018. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Bob, brothers Kenneth and Vernon Gordon, twin sisters Mary Voneta “Tiny” Gill, and Mary Boneta “Bonnie” Lavin,  a great grandson, Devan Lint, and sister-in-law, Marjorie Roethler.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Linda (Larry) Fixsel of Anthon, IA, Roberta “Bobbie” (Michael) Canale of Jupiter, FL, and Carol Cook of Dubuque, IA; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; her siblings, William (Cheryl) Gordon of Cherokee, Walter (Judy) Gordon of Meriden, and Elizabeth “Betty” Curry of Florida; and many other relatives and friends.
