Manfred 'Fred' Smith, Jr.

Manfred W. Smith, Jr. was born February 18, 1952, in Wagner, SD, to Hildegard (Shove) and Manfred W. Smith, Sr. At age 18 he joined the U.S. Air Force. In 1973 he married Cynthia Stokes. Together, they had three daughters, Julie, Jeanie and Jennifer. Fred proudly served his country for 20 years, which included tours around the world. He served in both the Vietnam and Desert Storm conflicts. In 1997, he retired as a TSGT. He spent his retirement by spending time with his family. Fred passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center on Sunday, January 5, 2014, at the age of 61. He was preceded in death by his mother, Hildegard, and a brother, James Smith. Left to cherish his memory is his father, Manfred Smith, Sr.; his daughters and their families: Julie (John) Polson, Jeanie Wittmeier, and Jennifer Smith; his grandchildren: Sarah, Jacob, Sydney and Gavin; his siblings: Connie (Delbert) Biberdorf, Rose (Robert) Hanson, Kenny (Wanda) Smith, Robert Smith, Patt (Gary) Gleason, Edward Smith, Louis (Vickie) Smith, Linda Lumbert, Michael Smith, and Judy (Jeff) Miller; his father Manfred Smith, Sr.; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 9th at Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee.
