Mary Jane Waters

April 18, 1935 — June 19, 2017

Mary Jane Waters, the only daughter of Frances and Leone (Carr) Waters was born on April 18, 1935 in Cherokee, IA. She had three brothers: Mike, Lenny, and Bob whom all have preceded her in death. Mary attended and graduated from Immaculate Conception School in Cherokee and spent the first year out of high school working as a medical stenographer at the MHI in Cherokee. She always remarked that this was her favorite job. During this year she lived with her family in Cherokee and saved money for college. Mary Jane graduated from Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, IA in 1958 with a Bachelor's of Science degree in physical education. Mary's first assignment after graduation was teaching in Aurelia. From there she went to Paullina and taught for nine years. She then taught in the Cherokee school system for the next 25 years until her retirement. Mary was an avid golfer. It was not unusual for her to play 18 holes daily after retiring. She experienced her only hole-in-one in 1999. Mary was a lifetime member of I.C. Church. She also enjoyed poker and bridge for years. For many summers Mary enjoyed visits to San Diego to see her brother Bob. The two enjoyed sightseeing in Southern California and side trips to Las Vegas. Mary will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her brothers Lenny's five children: Michael Waters of Fort Collins, CO, Anne Mullison of Lincoln, NE, Julie Currie of Des Moines, IA, Cheri Costlow of Van Meter, IA, and Bob Waters of Spirit Lake, IA. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Frances and Leone Waters; and three brothers, Mike, Lenny, and Bob Waters.
