Mattie 'Doris' Heistand

May 23, 1935 — September 2, 2013

Mattie 'Doris' (Dean) Heistand, the daughter of Robert and Bertha (Dingler) Dean, was born in Hogansville, GA on May 23, 1935. Her childhood years were spent in Georgia, where she attended the local schools and worked in the cotton mill. While working for her sister and brother-in-law in their Bar & Grill, Doris met her future husband, Robert Heistand. The two were married on December 1, 1955, at LaGrange, GA. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Missouri Valley, IA, and then spent nearly 20 years in the Omaha, NE and Council Bluffs, IA area. They were blessed with six children: Julie, Vivian, Linda, Tim, Christine and Robert. Doris worked as a nurse's aide in a nursing home for 15 years while living in Omaha-Council Bluffs. In 1976 they moved to Cherokee, IA, where Bob worked at Wilson Foods, and Doris took care of their home, babysat for numerous families, and volunteered her time at a nursing home. She enjoyed bowling, working in the yard, playing cards with family, putting puzzles together, doing crosswords and cross-stitch. She especially loved her cats. She passed away at St. Luke's Hospital in Sioux City, IA, on Monday, September 2, 2013, at age 78. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob on June 24, 2008; an infant son, Robert Eugene Heistand; grandson Donny Wood; 2 sisters, Nellie Brown and Dovie Lou Shelly; and 4 brothers, Jim, Dan, BuFord and Bruce Dean.
