Merlyn M. Cronin

August 8, 1923 — January 28, 2013

Merlyn Mary (McIntire) Cronin, the daughter of Clair and Mildred (Goodburn) McIntire, was born in Cherokee County, Iowa on August 8, 1923. Her childhood years were spent in the Marcus, Iowa area. She graduated from Marcus High School in 1941. She then attended Westmar College, and received her teaching certificate. She taught in country schools near Marcus. With her mother's passing, Merlyn gave up teaching to stay home and care for her younger siblings. On April 27, 1943, she was united in marriage to William J. Cronin. They made their home on a farm near Marcus where they raised cattle, hogs and sheep. Life on the farm kept her very busy, whether she was helping Willie with the chores, working in her vegetable and flower gardens, canning produce for the family, sewing and mending clothes, or doing embroidery. She also loved to read in her spare time. Following a brief illness, Merlyn passed away On January 28, 2013 at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus. She reached the age of 89 years, 5 months, 20 days. She was preceded in death by her husband Willie; her daughter Patricia; son-in-law Dennis Eckhoff; grandsons Brad Eckhoff and Donald M. Treinen; sister and brother-in-law Lila and Carl Miller; brother and sister-in-law Elmer and Twila McIntire; brothers Eldred, Lyle, Harold and Earl McIntire; in-laws Lloyd and Germaine Cronin, Donald Egger, Charles Beaton, Joseph and Marie Cronin, Francis Cronin and Kenneth Cronin. She is survived by her daughters: Mary (Don) Treinen of Remsen, IA, JoAnn (Tony) Ehrig of Cleghorn, IA, Jeanene (Keith) Kunkel of Remsen, IA, and Karen (Chuck) Hansen of Johnston, IA; 15 grandchildren: David Treinen, Mike (Jen) Treinen, Janet (Mark) Brown, Julie (Doug) Schmidt, Jeremy Ehrig, Jodi Ehrig, Joel (Beth) Ehrig, Emily (Tasso) Sideris, Jason Kunkel, Ryan Kunkel, Jared Kunkel, Brett Hansen, Derek Hansen, Jena Hansen, Kristy (Shawn) Speck; 5 great-granddaughters and 1 step-great grandson; sisters Norma Egger of Hubbard, IA and Eleanor Beaton of Phoenix, AZ; brother Bob (Glenda) McIntire of Clive, IA; sisters-in-law Marj McIntire of Marcus, Jean McIntire of Warren, OH, Peg Worthington of Batavia, NY, Barb McIntire of Marcus, Mary (Bob) Mai of Remsen, Joan Cronin of Marcus, Norma Cronin of Holstein, IA; a step-sister, Katheryn Nordlie of Sioux Falls, SD; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 1, 2013, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus.

VISITATION
Visitation will be AT THE CHURCH beginning at 3:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 until 7:00 Thursday evening. There will be a prayer service following the visitation at 7:00 P.M. Thursday night at the church.
