Neal Robert Johnston

August 3, 1965 — October 29, 2014

Neal Robert Johnston, the son of Robert and Eleanor (Conley) Johnston, was born August 3, 1965, in Cherokee, Iowa. His childhood years were spent on the farm near Cleghorn. Neal attended school and graduated from Meriden-Cleghorn High School in 1984. He then attended Iowa State University where he graduated with an Agriculture Studies Farm Operation degree in 1988. After college Neal moved back to Cleghorn where he started farming with his father. On February 15, 1997, he was united in marriage to Jill McDonald at the First Church of Christ in Cherokee. They were blessed with two daughter; Taylor and Trista. Neal enjoyed working on the family farm. He was known as the handyman on the farm for his ability to fix anything. In addition to his love of farming, Neal enjoyed race cars, camping and traveling, especially to Jamaica. Most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends. He will always be remembered for his great sense of humor and being a loving and caring husband and father. He was a very generous minded man that put others first. On October 29, 2014, Neal passed away at his residence surrounded by family and friends. He was preceded by his grandparents, Joe and Mildred Johnston, and Freeman and Ruth Conley; father and mother-in-law, Jim and Linda McDonald; and several aunts and uncles. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Jill Johnston of Cleghorn, IA; his two daughters, Taylor and Trista Johnston of Cleghorn, IA; parents, Robert and Eleanor Johnston; sister, Carla (Eugene) Beckwith of Aurora, SD, brother in law, Mike (Susy) McDonald of Ankeny, IA; special aunt and uncle, Jack and Diane McDonald of Missouri; as well as other relatives and friends.
