Nona J. Grohe

January 4, 1936 — July 22, 2021

Nona J. Grohe, the daughter of Richard and Hazel Peterson was born on January 4, 1936 at home in Aurelia, IA during a blizzard.  She attended school in Aurelia and Cherokee, IA. 

 On March 5, 1952, Nona was united in marriage to Gordon Grohe at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, IA.    To this union, three children were born, Susan, Michael and Kelli. 

 Nona worked at Hopes Fashion Farm for 14 years and then Jean’s Boutique.  Nona and Gordon owned and operated Gordy’s Hamburger Shops in Cherokee and Aurelia for many years.  She cherished her Schnauzers and Yorkie dogs over the years.  She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.  She enjoyed reading, walking, shopping, golfing and watching all of her grandchildren’s activities.  Nona was always available for her children and grandchildren by text or phone.

 On July 22, 2021, Nona passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at home at the age of 85.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Gordy; son, Mike and grandson, Wesly Grohe; sister Bonnie Pope and husband Leonard, brother Don Peterson and wife Charlene.

 Nona is survived by her children, Sue Roberts of Aurelia, Kelli Hirschman (Steve) of Aurelia; brother Jon (Rhonda) Peterson of Cherokee; brother-in-law Ron Grohe and family of Des Moines; Grandchildren: Stacy (Mike) McGee of Cherokee, Adam (Dawn) Roberts of Marcus, Christi Grohe of Des Moines, Toby Grohe of Des Moines, Taylor Grohe of Cedar Falls, Kati (Brian) Goman of Ames, Amy Lewis & fiancée Lyle Schumann of Cherokee, Nick Hirschman of Des Moines; Great-Grandchildren: Breanna (Sergio) Gochez, Emilee McGee and fiancée Jaime Lasher all of Ankeny, Kaleb McGee of Cherokee, Sydney (Jess) Kunzweiler of LeMars, Jocee, Mason, and Mia Roberts of Marcus, Izik Tate and Gage of Des Moines, Parker Grohe of Cherokee, Devontez Grohe of Waterloo, Coy and Bryn Lewis of Cherokee, and Ella and Duke Gorman of Ames; Great-Great Grandchildren Everleigh Kunzweiler of LeMars; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and all of her wonderful friends.

SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2021, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa.

VISITATION
Public visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday night at the Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee.
