Phyllis Arlene (Sand) Moore

Phyllis was born on May 19, 1925. She was the daughter of Harry and Lulu Belle (Hobbs) Miller. She grew up on the family farm in Cherokee County, IA. She graduated from Marcus High School in Marcus, IA. During her life Phyllis experienced technological extremes that ranged from growing up in a family where her mother made soap by hand, to a fondness for communication with her extended family on Facebook utilizing her iPad. Phyllis married her high school sweetheart Ray Sand on September 9, 1944 They lived in Marcus, IA, Phoenix AZ and Ames, IA where they raised 8 children until Ray's untimely death in 1968. Phyllis' proudest achievement was being responsible for 52 direct dependents. In 1983 Phyllis married Paul Moore. They resided in Mesa, AZ until Paul's untimely death in 1987. At the time of her passing, Phyllis was a resident of Vi at Grayhawk in Scottsdale, AZ. She resided at Vi for the last 15 years of her fruitful life, longer than she lived at any other place as an adult. She was an avid participant in the many programs offered at Vi, made innumerable friends and believed that she was "living the dream' at a resort designed just for her. Caregivers at Vi expressed reciprocal admiration for Phyllis. She was an avid reader, an artist who painted, sewed, made dolls and mink teddy bears and involved herself in many activities utilizing the creative process. She was proud of the fact that she finally overcame her fear of water and learned to swim. She attended religious services regularly, participated in all types of programs at Vi and generally made herself the indispensable resident. She will be missed. Preceding Phyllis in death were her parents, Harry and Lulu; husbands Ray and Paul; brothers, Harold and Bill; sisters Marilyn, Alta, Eleanor, Dorothy, Maxine and Peggy; daughter, Cynthia Young; sons, Joel and Todd Sand; granddaughter, Allison Sand; grandson, Aaron Young; and great granddaughter, Hannah Rathlisberger. She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Brian Sand and his wife Patty of Plymouth, MN; son, Kim Sand and his wife Tina of San Diego, CA; daughter Christina Summers and her husband Jim of Scottsdale, AZ; daughter, Lisa Kennedy and her husband Jeff of Cave Creek, AZ; son, Kevin Sand and his wife Gail of Chandler, AZ; 16 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Edith of Marcus, IA, Mary Bunkers of Granville, IA and Phyllis Miller of Council Bluffs, IA; brother-in-law, Dale Bunkers of Granville, IA; and other relatives and friends.
SERVICES

A memorial graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Holy Name Catholic Cemetery in Marcus, Iowa
