Thayne L. Curtis

October 27, 1933 — July 13, 2012

Thayne L. Curtis, the son of Harry and Violet (Hicks) Curtis, was born on October 27, 1933 in Quimby, IA. He attended Immaculate Conception School in Cherokee where he graduated in 1952. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Marine Corps, went to the San Diego Marine Corp Recruit Depot, and was later stationed at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hawthorne, Nevada where he was in special services. His job duties included clerk typist, projectionist, and was a lifeguard. He was united in marriage to Angie O'Dell. After the military he moved back to Cherokee with his young family and worked for the Illinois Central Railroad building bridges. He worked for Ament Construction for many years then started his own business, Curtis and Willis Construction. He eventually worked for Christensen Brothers before retiring. In his earlier years, Thayne also 'moonlighted' running projectors at the Arrow Theatre, Corral Drive-In, and the American Theatre. Thayne was a very skilled carpenter and one heck of a drywall artisan. He was very proud of the fact that he built his own house, with his home being the second one built in the Ament Addition. Thayne liked gardening and tinkering around the house, but his favorite hobby was fishing. Oh boy, did he love to fish! He could fish in a bathtub and catch his limit! Thayne also enjoyed the company of his children and grandchildren, and just people in general. He was a social butterfly! He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edith Mae 'Angie' O'Dell; one brother, David Curtis; and one sister, Delores Tallman. He is survived by his children: Thayne J. Curtis, Patrice Martin (Robin), and April Wallace (Lee) all of Cherokee; grandchildren: Katy Martin (Ed Hickey) of San Francisco, CA, Leah Martin of Brooklyn, NY, Hannah Martin and Nolan Martin both of Cherokee, Sean Curtis (Cindy) of Alabama, Shane Curtis and Zoe Meadows both of Cherokee, Devynne Reis, Bronsan Reis, and Alekzander Wallace all of Cherokee, and Devin Wallace, and Brendon Wallace both of Washta, IA; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Richard and Harlan (Trish) Curtis of Cherokee, Dean Curtis of Correctionville, Harry (Nancy) Curtis of Missouri, and Diane Dicks of Gassville, AK.
