Velma Mae Garvin

May 27, 1930 — November 29, 2019

Velma was born May 27, 1930 to Matt and Josephine Schwartz.  She was raised in Hartington, Nebraska. Being the oldest sibling of 12, she always had a lot of responsibilities growing up: farm chores of milking cows, tending the garden, working in the fields & caring for littler ones...

She met Richard (Dick) Garvin on a blind date while on leave from the service. First impressions were questionable when he showed up with his Harley Davidson hat!  They were married in 1953, and raised their own big family of 5. Moving from the farm to town in Marcus, Velma was trained as a florist, and opened The Marcus Greenhouse and Flower Shop. Together they made flowers their life for over 48 years!

Velma loved to be involved and help where she could: Foster Grandparents, Catholic Daughters, The Guild, Hobby Club, Card Clubs …until her health started to fail at 88, she was still volunteering at St. Mary’s in Remsen. She always believed in “Keeping Busy” & was an example of living it!

She also loved to have fun with her Family & Friends: relaxing at Lake Okoboji & Playing LOTS of CARDS!

Velma lived a full life with her Catholic Faith being very important to her, leading the Rosary when she could and attending mass frequently.

This past year at Heartland Care has been one of rest, finally taking the time for some naps!

Velma is survived by her 5 children; Chuck (Carol) of LeMars, Dean (Sheila) of Sioux City, Katie (Dick) Blount of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, Diane (Mark) Smith of Dana Point, CA and Karen (Kevin) Wauhob of Sioux City, 10 Grandchildren and 9 Great-grandchildren.

Velma, you take with you, a Piece of our Hearts

for we will never forget you.

Your Journey here is complete…Until we see you again!
