Vivian Meyer

September 9, 1921 — December 28, 2010

Vivian Ruth (Wilson) Meyer began her life's journey on September 9, 1921, at a rural farmstead in Marathon, IA. Her parents were Arthur James and Elsie Mae (Combs) Wilson. She was introduced to her three other siblings, Blanche, Oscar and Vergene. Brother, James was to come along later. Because of her father's death at her age of 5, Vivian learned to work on the farm at an early age. Between gardening and washing the 64 windows in their large farm house, she got a lot of practice for life to come. During her early life, she learned to play the piano by ear. She advanced her musical skills in school by learning to sing with a beautiful alto voice. That voice took her to Minneapolis, MN for the National Quartet Competition. She and her fellow students received 2nd place for their efforts. Her voice was used later in life for the benefit of the Lord by singing in church and at numerous funerals. After graduation in 1940, she worked for local families to earn money. She met and married Boyd Meyer on June 26, 1942. After the war, they started a family while living in the Linn Grove, Peterson area for 18 years. The children were Janice, Joyce, Jane, and Jim. They moved to Larrabee in 1963. In 1964, she started cooking at the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, IA. She was morning and dinner cook. She would comment on how the "count" was 100 and over. That meant there were 100 people in the old and new hospital to be served. She retired in 1988. She found time in her busy work schedule to belong to the Spring Township Women's Club. She was a member of the Larrabee Methodist Church, Methodist Ladies Aid and the Choir. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of both Peterson and Larrabee. Marathon High School had a tradition when Vivian graduated to allow each student to have their own individual motto. Vivian's was "Laughing and giggling takes up most of my time". May you always be laughing Mom! On December 28, 2010, Vivian passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee at the age of 89. Survivors include her children Jan Robinson (Cathy) of Larrabee, Joyce Putnam (John) of Sutherland, Jane Weins of Cherokee and Jim (Annette) Meyer of Larrabee, IA; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren; a sister-in-law Viola Wilson of Spencer, IA; a family friend Joyce Seydel of Paullina, IA and numerous nieces and nephews.
