Vurnace 'Bud' O. Slechta

Vurnace "Bud" Oliver Slechta was born on December 14, 1921 to Jerome and Ernestine Slechta in Denison, IA. He attended Denison Public School and then served three years in the US Army. He served in World War II in Asiatic Pacific Theatre. On August 16, 1946 Bud was united in marriage to Virginia Brown in Deloit, IA. To this union, a daughter, Donna was born. In October 1945, he started working for the Illinois Central Railroad in Council Bluffs, IA in the Water Works Department as a repairman. In July 1947, Bud and Virginia relocated to Cherokee, IA where they made their home. He retired in April 1983 with 42 years of service. Bud was a lifetime member of the VFW. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking, feeding and watching his "backyard" friends, and his family. Bud was a devoted husband and father. On March 13, 2013, Bud passed away at the age of 91 at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters and five brothers. Bud is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Virginia Slechta of Cherokee, IA; daughter, Donna (Veryl) Droegmiller of Holstein, IA; sister, Lucille Curnyn of Denison, IA; grandson, Brian (Kathi) Droegmiller of Merrill, IA; granddaughter, Debbie Droegmiller of Battle Creek, IA; great-granddaughter Shayla "Snickelfritz" Droegmiller; great grandsons, Brady and Kolt Droegmiller; many nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
SERVICES
Abiding by his wishes, cremation will take place. There will be no public services. The family will have a memorial in his honor at a later date.
