Walter L. Brenner

April 10, 1924 — February 14, 2015

Walter Leo Brenner was born April 10, 1924 at Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Louis and Clara (Matt) Brenner. He grew up and was educated in the area. He served in the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant during WWII. He married Patricia Heller, and settled on a farm just north of Cherokee, Iowa at the intersection of state highways 59 and 3, across from the big water tower. Walt was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for many years, and was a past member of Knights of Columbus. He worked for many years as the Advertising Manager for the Cherokee Daily Times. Following that endeavor, he started his own company, Appreciated Advertising, and sold a wide gamut of specialty advertising items. Always an adventurous soul, Walt enjoyed snowmobiling, canoeing, camping and traveling to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, and the Black Hills of South Dakota. After retiring, he would often pull his family trailer and boat to the Iowa Great Lakes where he spent much of the summer. After retiring, whether he was in Iowa or Arizona, where he lived part-time for many years, he was always up for a good round of golf. He was an avid fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. Throughout his life, Walter loved to draw pictures of cartoon faces on any paper available, such as napkins. There are restaurants between Iowa and Arizona that still have his images hanging on their walls--his work was that good. One oddity about Walt is that on the farm in Cherokee, he always had a German Sheppard named Rusty. There were 3-4 dogs named Rusty over the years. He will always be remembered by one thing in particular--he was a GOOD MAN. Walt passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at the Gardens Assisted Living Facility in Cherokee--less than a half mile from his former farmplace. He was 90. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Patricia, sons Teddy and Philip, siblings Linus, Maurice, Dorothy and Paul, and a good friend, Marie Clark of Quimby. Left to cherish his memory is middle son Patrick and his wife Patty of Tempe, Arizona.
