“David, Andrew, Susannah and family, I was so sorry to hear about Rebecca's passing, but she is with God in a place she has planned for all of her life. Our family has many fond memories of her, and the strong influence she had on our lives. Early in Rebecca's teaching career she taught at Lincoln School, and Kelsey was attending there at that time. Even though Kelsey did not have Rebecca as a teacher, she would see the young Mrs. Phipps every day. Garth had Rebecca for fifth grade Language Arts and Science. He enjoyed her as a teacher, and he has always told me that even at the young age of ten, he was aware what a nice person she was. Larry worked her with her for many years on the Science Curriculum, when they both taught physical science at their different levels. I knew of Rebecca, but really never got to 'know her' until I started teaching at Roosevelt and had the good fortune to have a room next to hers. She was a great teacher of science with all of her hands-on labs and experiments, and I know she spent hundreds of dollars of her own money for many of them. However, I always felt that Rebecca was an even greater teacher of a Christian life to her students. Her strong faith in God, her deep understanding of the needs and love of all children, and her Christian behavior was apparent in everything she did. I often told her that she might be the only Bible that some of her students would ever see.
Rebecca's children were the joy of her life, as are mine, so some of the most enjoyable memories I have of her is discussing and sharing stories about our children. We would be grateful for all of their good times, and give each other strength through life's setbacks.
It is difficult for me to express how much she meant to me and the influence she had on my life, but I told her on several occations that I felt my knowing her had made me a better person. I appreciate all I learned from her in her quiet manner, yet her strong convictions of right and wrong.
I hope your family with treasure all of the wonderful memories you have of Rebecca. I know I will always remember my friend, Rebecca. I shall think of her often in the future, and when I do remember her, I will smile. God Bless. ”
